Wheelchair Lift FAQs: Everything you need to know
A wheelchair lift makes your house safer and more convenient, and can be essential in helping you remain independent in your own home. Check out our most frequently asked questions about wheelchair lifts:
How does a wheelchair platform lift work?
A vertical platform lift consists of 3 main components:
1. Lift tower with a hydraulic or ball screw drive mechanism
2. Platform with solid sides that attach to the lift tower and moves vertically (up or down)
3. Key operated controls to operate the unit
How many feet can a platform lift travel?
Typically, between 4’-10’ for residential spaces. There are some commercial units that can travel up to 14’ when built in a hoistway.
How are wheelchair platform lifts powered?
The vertical platform lifts we offer are powered by normal AC current, with an option to upgrade to a continuous charging DC battery-power motor. Choosing the battery-powered unit can be advantageous as it will provide several “round trips” in the event of a power outage. A platform lift with AC power will not run if there is an electrical outage.

Are wheelchair lifts weather-proof?
The wheelchair platform lifts we offer are equipped with weather-resistance controls and have a specialized coating that protects the unit from outdoor elements. In colder climates, an optional cold-weather package is available as well.
Is there a difference between a Wheelchair Lift, a Porch Lift or a Vertical Platform Lift (VPL)?
No. The terms Wheelchair Lift, Porch Lift, and Vertical Platform Lift, (VPL for short) all refer to the same type of product. The term Porch Lift is common because this type of lift is ideal for providing access from ground level to a porch or deck where a ramp is not feasible.
